I work primarily with paint, ink, papers, prints, charcoal and canvas: a conventional vocabulary for its familiar historical reference. My images contain many diverse layers of meaning from the universal to the specific and personal, frequently giving reference to my experience with nature. At times it speaks to issues of social justice, revelation and connection, uses universal symbols. During this last year and a half of Covid-19 I found myself inside a great deal and continually bringing nature indoors. I was drawn to the nature of flowers during this time. These images were done during this time.
Magnolia 1,2, 3 are mixed media, print and paintings. The background is painted on, much like a watercolor wash; the floral images are prints cut from a material called Safety Kut and printed, sometimes repeatedly, on top of the background. Safety Kut is a soft, buttery ,wonderful material that functions much like a linoleum cut or woodblock cut. I used watercolor paper for these. They are 15 “ x 11″ and the paint was latex house paint! Watered down, it acts much like watercolor, except it’s thicker. I often work with universal symbolism. The Magnolia flower symbolizes dignity, perseverance, and love of nature.
